Silsden's Story in the Great War Exhibition & Book
Client: Silsden Local History Group
To mark the 100 years anniversary of the Great War, the Silsden Local History Group decided an exhibition would make a fitting tribute. This exhibition would share some of the poignant stories of men who left the area to 'fight for King and Country' and those left behind. The SLHG contacted Inchpunch after seeing some of our previous exhibition design work on display in the Yorkshire Museum.
When initially discussing this project, the SLHG team requested the exhibition should be portable as they wanted to take the graphics "on tour" throughout the local area. Our suggestion was to display the graphics over a series of pull up banner stands (or roller banners as they are also known). The banner stands themselves are lightweight, durable, portable, easy to assemble / dissemble and the graphics would be well protected during transportation.
To give all the graphics an early and authentic 1900's feel we designed them to look like a series of posters mounted to a wall. Period fonts, distressed paper backgrounds and actual WW1 photographs added to the sense of realism. Even the stone wall texture is native to the Silsden area. The consistent design implemented across all the graphics allows them to be exhibited as a group or individually.
We purposely displayed the poster graphics in the top half of the banners only. This was to ensure the information could be read easily (as it is at eye level) and also allow tables to be placed in front of the banners (if required) without obscuring any important information.
Silsden's Story in the Great War 1914 - 1918 the Book
Due to the overwhelming popularity of the exhibition, the Silsden Local History Group decided to produce a book based on the display graphics. Inchpunch were called into action again to design the 36 page book which included all the graphics from the exhibition plus plenty of additional material.
